Course objectives


         Development, over the first two years (L1 and L2) of a solid foundation in Life and Geo-sciences to provide a wide range of general (including Biochemistry taught within the department) or vocational options (Biotechnology or Pollution control, offered within the establishment) from the 3rd year.

Course Description

   The basic curriculum is semester based and delivered in the form of lectures, tutorials, and practical work. The course content complies with the European format of higher education studies.

   An academic year is comprised of two semesters. This degree is aimed at training future assistant engineers, engineers or doctors in the field of Life Sciences, or Geosciences and the Environment.
   The first two years are a joint core curriculum and from the third year students can opt for either a short course (vocational Undergraduate Degree) or a long course (general Undergraduate Degree) in either of the above sectors. The long course opens the door to further studies to the Master (5 year) and Doctorate (8 year) levels. The programme is enriched by visits to companies or industrial sites during the 3rd year.

   A series of 8 to 10 conferences is held in the field of Life Sciences with speakers from both the public sector (key establishments) and the private sector. During  the 3rd year students will undertake mini-projects and guided research work (TER). General culture and communication modules are taught throughout the three levels L1, L2, L3. An English language module is open at all levels.

   In year 3 bilingual teachers will deliver a significant percentage of the programme in English. Information and communication technologies compose an important element in the course and students have access to standard multimedia tools (support and bibliographic research) plus specific databases and dedicated software. Several computer rooms are at students’ disposal.

Opportunities and/or prospects

   The programmes have been designed to promote coherence with the universities of Montpellier and Marseille. The faculty from each specialisation meets regularly and also participates in the teaching programmes in partner universities. Students may choose to pursue a vocational Undergraduate Degree (from L3), other general Undergraduate Degrees (from L3), a vocational Master’s degree, or research Master degrees in this subject area. Admission is based on application or competitive entry examination to an engineering school (INSA, Alès-Nîmes Ecole de Mines, National Higher School of Agronomy at Montpellier, Compiègne Technologic University, etc.). Students are prepared for a competitive entry examination for the civil service: teaching, administration.
