    Department presentation

Nîmes university is located in the heart of the most industrial area of the Languedoc-Roussillon region, in a city with a proud industrial past. A new University such as ours must be tuned in to accompanying the major local economic trends and questions and this in line with national priorities and policies: logistics, information technology, communication, pollution control, dismantling of nuclear power stations, waste management and biotechnologies.

The scientific programmes take such priorities into account. In addition, the programmes are run in close partnership with the Alès-Nîmes Ecole des Mines (engineer level college), partner universities in Aix-Marseille and Montpellier, the Montpellier-Nîmes faculty of medicine, the University Hospital Centre, the Nîmes University Technological Institute, the Valrho Atomic Energy Authority site, the cyclotron and many other actors in local economic development.

The Nîmes programmes already offer Licence level (European degree format) 3 year degrees on a vocational or general basis, the latter being for students wishing to carry on with their studies through to Master (5 years) or Doctorate (8 years) level. At every stage of the student?s course the university is attentive to keeping transversal options open with a view to providing maximum support for career orientation via direct contact with the teaching teams. Additional modules are integrated for the development of general culture, foreign language skills or understanding of communications tools.

The course is aimed at the acquisition, use and understanding of a wide range of knowledge and skills. In order to ensure such development, the students frequently come into contact with professionals from the corresponding work environments, lecturers from different horizons, researchers (academics and privately employed), business leaders and this where possible within the framework of field or study trips. Access to the best, most pertinent tools for the practical element of the course is a primary objective for the pedagogical team.
